Introducing Yourself

July 8th, 2018 in English Learning

Here are some phrases you can use to introduce yourself.

My name is …

I’m…

Nice to meet you. I’m Janet.
Glad to meet you. My name is John.

In a more formal style, you can say:

Let me introduce myself. My name is Joe.
I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Shein Mathews.

Introducing other people

To introduce other people, you can use an expression beginning with This is…

This is my friend, Ricky.
This is my brother, Samuel.
This is my sister, Mary.
This is my father, Mr. Mathews.
This is my mother, Mrs. Sheila.
This is my daughter, Nelly.
This is Margaret, my colleague.

When we introduce more than one person at the same time, we use These are.

These are my children, John and Stella.
These are my friends, Peter and Harry.
These are my grandparents.

While introducing our family members or close friends, we usually only use the first name. Full names (first name + surname) are used in more formal situations.

This is my colleague, Sophia Fernandes.

When people are introduced to one other, they usually say Hello or Hi. In very formal British English, How do you do? is used. In American English How are you? is more common. Note that How do you do?is not a question and the normal reply is How do you do?
