As and so

Combine the following sentences using as or so.

Hints

The subordinating conjunction as is used to show the reason.

  • As he was late, he missed the train.
  • As she was the only candidate, she got the job.

The conjunction so is used to talk about the effect.

  • He was late, so he missed the train.
  • She was the only candidate, so she got the job.

Note that as-clauses are relatively formal. In a less formal style, we express the same idea with so.

As-clauses usually come at the beginning of a sentence and are separated from the rest of the sentence with a comma. Clauses introduced by so usually goes after the main clause.

Complete the following sentences using as or so.

1. He hadn’t done his homework. The teacher punished him.

2. He walked very slowly. He missed the train.

3. The baby is just six months old. He cannot speak.

4. I was not feeling well. I did not go to office.

5. There were no lights. He could not study.

Answers

1. As he hadn’t done his homework, the teacher punished him. / He hadn’t done his homework so the teacher punished him.

2. As he walked very slowly, he missed the train. / He walked very slowly, so he missed the train.

3. As the baby is just six months old, he cannot speak. / The baby is just six months old so he cannot speak.

4. As I was not feeling well, I did not go to office. / I was not feeling well, so I did not go to office.

5. As there were no lights, he could not study. / There were no lights so he could not study.
