Expressions with like

The word like is used in a large number of idiomatic expressions.

Like crazy/mad

If you are doing something like crazy, you are doing it in an extreme or fast way.

John is quite active on Facebook. He is adding friends like crazy.

He put the baby in the car and drove like mad to the hospital. (= He drove really fast.)

Like I say / said

This expression is used to suggest that you are saying repeating something you have already said.

It is unfortunate but, like I said, it is the only way out.

Of like mind

When two people are of like mind, they think in the same way.

Although we usually disagree about most things, we are of like mind on this issue.

Something like

This expression is used to show that you are guessing at an amount or number.

She makes something like $40,000 a year.

There is nothing like…

This expression is used to emphasize that a thing is better than any other.

There is nothing like a hot coffee on a cold winter morning.

There is no place like…

This expression is used to emphasize that a place is better than any other place.

There is no place like home.

What are you like! / What s/he is like!

This expression is used to emphasize that you find someone’s behavior too silly.

You forgot to lock the car? What are you like!

What is someone / something like?

This expression is used for asking about the features of a person or thing.

‘I haven’t met your sister – what’s she like?’ ‘She is tall and pretty.’
