Participles exercise

When both sentences have the same subject, it is sometimes possible to combine them with a participle. An example is given below.

The men cried at the top of their voice. They rushed to the spot.

Crying at the top of their voice, the men rushed to the spot.

When the sentences have different subjects, we use the participle absolutely.

It was a rainy day. We cancelled the trip.

It being a rainy day, we cancelled the trip.

Exercise

Combine the following sentences by using participles.

1. The workers finished their work. They left for home.

2. He heard my cries. He rushed to help me.

3. He was frustrated with life. He committed suicide.

4. He finished his homework. He went to play with his friends.

5. He had been hit hard on the head. He lost his consciousness.

6. She had been through so much in life. She was afraid of nothing.

7. I walked along the road. I saw a strange sight.

8. The sun had risen. We set out on our journey.

Answers

1. Having finished their work, the workers left for home.

2. Hearing my cries, he rushed to help me.

3. Frustrated with life, he committed suicide.

4. Having finished his homework, he went to play with his friends.

5. Having been hit hard on the head, he lost his consciousness.

6. Having been through so much in life, she was afraid of nothing.

7. Walking along the road, I saw a strange sight.
