When both sentences have the same subject, it is sometimes possible to combine them with a participle. An example is given below.

The men cried at the top of their voice. They rushed to the spot.

Crying at the top of their voice, the men rushed to the spot.

When the sentences have different subjects, we use the participle absolutely.

It was a rainy day. We cancelled the trip.

It being a rainy day, we cancelled the trip.
