The phrases given in this lesson will help you do your shopping.

Asking for things

To ask for things in a shop, use I’d like… or Could I have…?

I’d like two kilos of sugar, please.

I’d like five kilos of rice, please.

I’d like two liters of milk, please.

Could I have a kilo of rice, please?

Could I have a carrier bag, please?

Use the phrase I’m looking for… or I need… to say what you are looking for.

I’m looking for a Barbie doll for my daughter.

I’m looking for a blue shirt.

I’m looking for a camera.

I need some batteries for my torch.

I need some razors.

To ask if the shop sells the thing you want, use Do you sell…? or Have you got…?

Do you sell flowers?

Have you got a dancing doll?

Do you sell mangoes?

When you have decided what you want to buy, use I’ll have… or I’ll take…

I’ll have that blue shirt.

OK. I’ll take this sweater.

I’ll take two pumpkins.

Saying what you have to do

If you need to buy something, use I have to… or I’ve got to…

I have to buy some clothes.

I have to buy a nice birthday gift for my daughter.

I have to get some eggs.

I have got to buy a gift for him.

I have got to get a new laptop.

The structure I need to… is also used to express the same idea.

I need to buy a laptop.

I need to get a new pair of jeans.

To talk about some very important shopping, use I must…

I must buy a pair of trousers for the interview.

I must buy a gift for my wife.
