In grammar words are divided into classes known as parts of speech. There are eight parts of speech in English.

They are: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections.

Nouns

A noun is the name of a person, animal, quality, thing, material, place, group or idea. Examples are: Raju, France, beauty, science, Ganga, Alps, iron, English etc.

Pronoun

A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun. Examples are: I, we, he, they, this, that, who, whom etc.

Verbs

A verb is a word that says what the subject is or has. Verbs also show what people or things do. Examples are: is, am, are, do, does, come, go, bring, take etc.

Adjectives

An adjective is a word that says something about a noun. Examples are: nice, kind, brave, soft, intelligent and clever

Adverbs

An adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. Most adverbs end in –ly. Nearly all place words and time words can also be used as adverbs. Examples are: now, then, soon, softly, gently, kindly, eagerly, today, here, there, always, never, too, very, often etc.

Prepositions

A preposition is a word used before a noun or pronoun to indicate ideas such as time, place, direction, position etc. Examples are: in, on, at, about, above, to, with and by

Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases or sentences. Examples are: and, but, because, or, if, when and before

Interjections

An interjection is a word used to express a sudden and strong feeling. Examples are: Ah! Alas! Hurrah!
