Writing compound sentences

A sentence that consists of just one clause is called a simple sentence. A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and one subordinate clause.
A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses.
Each sentence given below consists of just one clause. Change the following simple sentences into compound sentences.
1. Besides making himself miserable, he makes others unhappy.
2. Taking his coat, he went outside.
3. In spite of his hard work, he failed.
4. The treasurer being absent, the secretary signed the check.
5. He left the country to escape arrest.
6. On account of heavy rains, the trains were cancelled.
7. The problem was too difficult to be solved.
8. In spite of looking everywhere, I could not find the keys.
9. Running fast, the old man caught the bus.
10. In spite of occupying a high position, he is humble.
